DRONE IN AZORES
7-16 AUGUST 2027
10 DAY DRONE PHOTO WORKSHOP
Discover the Azores from above on a 10-day aerial photography journey through São Miguel, Flores, Corvo, and Terceira.
Limited to just 4 participants, this workshop offers an intimate and focused environment as you fly over crater lakes, volcanic ridges, waterfalls, and dramatic Atlantic coastlines. Capture unforgettable images and experience the islands from a perspective few ever get to see.
Join me, Bruno Ázera, for an unforgettable 10-day aerial photography adventure through the heart of the North Atlantic. Having been born and raised in the Azores, I have spent a lifetime exploring these islands' shifting lights, hidden coasts, and dramatic landscapes. Now, I invite you to see my home from a perspective that reveals its true grandeur: the sky.
This workshop is more than a tour. It is a masterclass in aerial creativity across four distinct islands: São Miguel, Flores, Corvo, and Terceira. From the geometric patterns of tea plantations and volcanic craters to the rugged waterfalls of the "wild west," we will use drones to capture compositions that are simply impossible from the ground. Whether you are refining your flight skills or building a professional portfolio, this journey blends expert field instruction with the deep local knowledge necessary to be in the right place at the right moment.
The Azores are known for their lush greenery, dramatic volcanic formations, and unspoiled natural beauty. They are one of the most extraordinary aerial photography destinations on Earth. I have personally arranged every logistical detail, from inter-island flights to private shuttles and comfortable accommodations, so you can focus entirely on your art.
But this adventure is more than just drone photography. It is about connecting with the Azorean culture, meeting the warm people who call these islands home, and discovering hidden spots known mostly to locals. As your guide, I will be with you at every step, helping you read the dynamic Atlantic weather and turning challenges into atmospheric opportunities, ensuring you leave with a collection of images that truly capture the soul of the Azores.

ITINERARY OVERVIEW
Day 1: Arrival & The Tea Fields
After arriving at João Paulo II Airport, we meet for a welcome lunch to get to know the group, go over safety protocols, and discuss your aerial photography goals for the week. In the afternoon, we head to Gorreana, Europe’s oldest tea plantation, where the fields and hedge lines are perfect for a first low-altitude flight, practicing smooth gimbal movements and top-down patterns. For sunset, we fly on the north coast cliffs at Santa Bárbara or Cintrão, with black volcanic rock against the white Atlantic swell.
Day 2: Lagoa do Fogo & Sete Cidades
We start early with sunrise at Lagoa do Fogo, as the light comes over the crater rim and lights up the water while the caldera walls are still in shadow. Around midday, we head west to the Sete Cidades highlands. We start at Lagoa do Pau Pique, a small crater ideal for top-down shots, then Lagoa do Canário, and then the main caldera with Lagoa Verde and Lagoa Azul and the color contrast between them. We finish at Grota do Inferno for golden hour, using the walkway as a leading line with the craters stretching toward the ocean.
Day 3: Vila Franca Islet, Furnas & Mosteiros
We start at the coast facing Ilhéu de Vila Franca, where we have special authorization to fly over this protected reserve and capture its circular shape. (Note: all flights are made from the shoreline to respect wildlife areas.) We then head to Furnas and Terra Nostra Park, where drones are not allowed, so we switch to ground photography of the gardens, steam, and geothermal colors, with time for a swim in the thermal pool. Lunch is a traditional Cozido das Furnas, slow-cooked underground using volcanic heat. We finish the day at Mosteiros, practicing safe low flights over the water to capture the waves hitting the sea stacks at sunset.
Day 4: Flores, The Wild West
We fly from São Miguel to Flores, the wildest island in the Azores. After checking in and our first image review session, we head to Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro, with its high cliffs and waterfalls dropping into a lagoon. The vertical walls make this a challenging place to fly, so we guide you on keeping visual line of sight (VLOS) while capturing the scale of the landscape.
Day 5: Lakes, Waterfalls & Albarnaz
We start at sunrise at Morro Alto, flying over Lagoa Negra and Lagoa Comprida, with the contrast between the dark water of one lake and the green of the other. We continue along the west coast near Lagoa Rasa and Lagoa Funda, looking for waterfalls and rainbows, and end the day at the Albarnaz Lighthouse, using it as an anchor point against the cliffs at sunset.
Day 6: Corvo & Rocha dos Bordões
We take a zodiac boat trip with skipper Carlos Mendes to Corvo to fly over the Caldeirão, one of the best drone locations in the Azores, with its lakes and green fields inside the crater. (Note: if the sea is too rough for the crossing, we explore the waterfalls on the west coast of Flores instead.) Back on Flores, we finish the day at Rocha dos Bordões, a wall of vertical basalt columns with great textures from above.
Day 7: Angra do Heroísmo & Pico Dona Joana
We fly to Terceira and check into our accommodation in the center of Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO World Heritage city, where we go on a photo walk through its colorful streets and historic architecture. Later, we visit Algar do Carvão, one of the few volcanic chimneys in the world you can walk into (ground photography). We end the day at Pico Dona Joana, one of my favorite places to fly a drone in the Azores, where the volcanic cone rises out of the patchwork fields with Ilhéus das Cabras in the background.
Day 8: Volcanic Textures
We start the morning at Ilhéus das Cabras, flying from the coast to capture the cliffs and their orange and yellow layers of volcanic ash, great for detail shots. We then have lunch in Praia da Vitória with Alcatra, the island’s traditional pot roast. In the afternoon, we explore Ponta do Mistério, a lesser-known area with volcanic formations perfect for abstract aerial images. We finish at Biscoitos, where the black lava and white waves are ideal for high-contrast aerial photography.
Day 9: The Patchwork Finale
We return to Pico Dona Joana, this time with morning light, to see the same landscape in completely different conditions. After lunch, we have our final editing session to select your best images of the week and prepare a portfolio for a group showcase. We finish at Serra do Cume, photographing Terceira’s famous patchwork fields at sunset.
Day 10: Ponta das Contendas & Farewell
We start the morning at Ponta das Contendas for a final flight, along a stretch of coastline with brown and orange cliffs and a chain of small islets reaching into the Atlantic, especially beautiful in the soft early light. After a farewell breakfast and making sure all data transfers are done, airport transfers are arranged based on your departure time. I hope you leave with great images and new skills as a drone pilot.

ACCOMMODATIONS

WHAT TO BRING
GEAR ESSENTIALS
The Drone (Primary Camera)
This is your main tool for the trip. I personally fly with a DJI Mavic 4 Pro, which handles the Atlantic winds perfectly.
Recommendation
A drone with good wind resistance is ideal (Mavic 3 series, Air 3). While a DJI Mini is capable of stunning images, be aware that it has limitations in strong coastal winds.
Backup
If you have a second drone, bring it. Accidents happen, and having a backup ensures you keep flying no matter what.
Batteries & Charging
Bring at least 3 to 4 batteries. If you have a "Fly More" combo, bring the charging hub. We will be out in the field for long days, and charging opportunities in the vehicle are limited.
Power Bank
Since we cannot charge everyone's batteries in the car simultaneously, I highly recommend bringing a high-capacity Power Bank (20,000mAh+) with at least 65W Power Delivery (PD) output. This will allow you to fast-charge your drone batteries inside your bag while we are driving or eating lunch.
Drone Filters
ND Filters
Essential for video shooters to maintain the 180-degree shutter rule, and great for photographers wanting to create smooth water effects on waves and waterfalls. A set ranging from ND8 to ND64 is usually sufficient.
CPL (Polarizer)
Great for cutting glare on the ocean and bringing out the blues in the crater lakes.
Ground Camera (Secondary)
For the specific locations where we cannot fly (Angra do Heroísmo, Furnas Park, and the volcanic caves), a handheld camera is necessary.
A Mirrorless/DSLR or even a high-end smartphone is perfect. You don't need a heavy kit. A standard zoom (e.g., 24-70mm) is enough to capture the architecture and botanical details.
Storage
SD Cards
High-speed cards (U3/V30 or faster) are a must for 4K video. Bring more than you think you need.
Hard Drive
A fast SSD (rugged if possible) to back up your footage during our evening sessions.
CLOTHING & FOOTWEAR
Waterproof & Windproof Jacket
The Azores’ weather is famously unpredictable, especially along the coastline where we will be flying. A high-quality waterproof and windproof jacket with sealed seams and a hood is arguably the most important piece of clothing you will bring.
Note: Since drone photography involves standing still for long periods, you will feel the wind chill more than if you were hiking.
Warm Layers
Evenings can be cool, particularly at higher elevations like Lagoa do Fogo or the craters of Flores. Bring warm layers, such as a fleece jacket or a lightweight down vest, to keep you comfortable during those sunset shoots and night photography sessions.
Quick-Drying Pants
Jeans take a long time to dry if you get caught in a shower. Opt for quick-drying pants made from synthetic materials or lightweight hiking trousers that offer comfort, functionality, and wind resistance.
Footwear
Agility Over Bulk This is a common question. I personally prefer lightweight running shoes or trail runners over heavy hiking boots. While boots provide protection, the terrain we access for drone launch spots doesn't require them. Running shoes offer better feel, grip, and flexibility for moving around launch sites. Choose what makes you comfortable, but heavy boots are not a necessity.
Swimwear (For the Thermal Pools)
We will be visiting Terra Nostra Park in Furnas, famous for its thermal pools. I highly recommend taking a dip, so don’t forget your swimwear and flip-flops.
Be Prepared The key to enjoying the Azores is flexibility. Be prepared for sudden weather changes, and layer up so you can stay comfortable while focusing on your flight path.
GETTING TO THE AZORES
This photo workshop begins on São Miguel Island and concludes on Terceira Island. The most convenient way to arrive is by flying into Ponta Delgada (PDL) on São Miguel, which serves as the main international hub with frequent connections from Europe and North America.
A Stress-Free Start
Since the workshop begins directly on São Miguel, you avoid the hassle of catching a connecting domestic flight immediately after your international journey. Instead, you can head straight to the hotel to relax, refresh, and settle in at your own pace before we gather for our welcome lunch.
Sample Travel Routes
From the U.S. & Canada: Direct flights often depart from Boston (BOS), New York (JFK/EWR), or Toronto (YYZ) to Ponta Delgada (PDL).
From Europe: Frequent direct connections are available from Lisbon (LIS) and Porto (OPO), as well as major hubs like London, Frankfurt, or Paris to Ponta Delgada (PDL).
While I am happy to offer general advice based on my experience, I recommend consulting with your travel agent or preferred airline to find the best specific connection for your needs.
DEPARTURE & RETURN FLIGHTS
The workshop officially ends on Terceira Island (TER). For your return journey, you have two flexible options:
Option 1: Fly home from Terceira (TER). Terceira has direct connections to mainland Portugal (Lisbon/Porto) and limited international routes.
Option 2: Return to São Miguel (PDL) – Included. If you prefer to fly out of Ponta Delgada, I include the return flight from Terceira to São Miguel in your package. We can schedule this for the final day of the workshop to align with your international departure.
INTER-ISLAND FLIGHTS & BAGGAGE
All inter-island flights (São Miguel → Flores → Terceira → Return) are included in your package and operated by SATA Azores Airlines.
Important Baggage Rules for Photographers SATA can be strict with cabin weight limits. Please pack accordingly.
Carry-On: 1 bag up to 8 kg (17.6 lbs) + 1 personal item.
Lithium Batteries: must be packed in your carry-on. They are strictly prohibited in checked luggage.
Checked Bag: 1 bag included up to 23 kg (50 lbs).
