ITINERARY OVERVIEW
Day 1: Arrival & Introduction to Terceira
Welcome to Terceira Island! Upon arrival, you'll be greeted at the airport and transferred to your hotel in the historic city of Angra do Heroísmo. After you’ve had a chance to settle in and relax, we’ll come together for a welcome lunch, an opportunity to meet your fellow photographers and begin our adventure in good company.
In the afternoon, we dive into the historic charm of Angra. Capture vibrant façades, mosaic sidewalks, and coastal views from Alto da Memória. This UNESCO World Heritage city offers a rich blend of culture and color for street and architecture photography.
For sunset, we drive up to Serra de Santa Bárbara, the highest point on the island, for panoramic views over Terceira’s lush patchwork of fields and coastal cliffs.
Day 2: Coastal Wonders & Volcanic Mysteries
We begin at Serretinha Natural Pools for sunrise, where Ilhéu das Cabras sits dramatically offshore. The volcanic coastline is ideal for long exposures.
After breakfast, we visit Pico Dona Joana for landscape work and potentially drone options. From here, we journey into the heart of the island to explore the Black Forest, where the interplay of light and shadow in the dense trees is perfect for moody compositions.
After lunch in Praia da Vitória, we head to Algar do Carvão—a dormant volcano you can walk inside. The textures, moss, and volcanic formations are unlike anything else.
We end the day with sunset at Biscoitos, capturing the rugged lava pools as golden light dances across the Atlantic.
Day 3: Lighthouse Views & Serra do Cume
We kick off at Ponta das Contendas, where the striking contrast of brown and black lava rock formations meets the Atlantic.
After lunch, enjoy free time in Angra do Heroísmo—perfect for a relaxed photo walk through its vibrant streets, tiled sidewalks, and historical facades.
In the late afternoon, we head out to Serra do Cume, one of Portugal’s most iconic viewpoints. From this panoramic ridge, we’ll photograph the island’s iconic patchwork fields separated by volcanic stone walls—especially stunning in the golden light.
Day 4: Hello to São Miguel, Tea Plantation & Seascapes
We fly to João Paulo II Airport in Ponta Delgada. You have some time to relax or explore the city's downtown. These locations offer fantastic street photography and a chance to capture the essence of Azorean life.
After lunch we head out to Gorreana Tea Plantation, the oldest in Europe. The rolling green tea fields contrast beautifully with the Atlantic backdrop, making for incredible landscape compositions. Take time to explore the factory and understand the tea-making process.
For sunset, we choose between Santa Bárbara Beach or Miradouro do Cintrão, depending on weather conditions. Santa Bárbara offers golden light reflecting off the waves, while Cintrão provides dramatic cliffside views with Sete Cidades in the background.
Day 5: Lagoa do Fogo & Sete Cidades
We start our morning at Lagoa do Fogo, one of the island’s highest points. This volcanic lake is often covered in mist, adding a moody atmosphere.
Next, we travel west to explore the Sete Cidades crater, home to the striking Lagoa Verde and Lagoa Azul. The contrast between the two lakes is best appreciated from Miradouro da Vista do Rei. We’ll discuss how to frame this incredible view and use leading lines to enhance our compositions.
In the late afternoon, we descend into Sete Cidades village before heading to Mosteiros Beach for sunset. This rugged seascape features dramatic rock formations, perfect for long-exposure photography to capture the movement of the waves.
Day 6: Vila Franca Islet, Hot Springs & The Best Viewpoints
Our morning starts at Vila Franca Islet, a unique volcanic crater island with an inner lagoon.
Next, we explore Terra Nostra Park, a lush botanical garden famous for its thermal pools. The golden hues of the iron-rich water create a unique photographic element. Bring your swimwear to enjoy the warm, mineral-rich waters (35–40°C).
For lunch, we experience the famous Cozido das Furnas, a traditional dish slow-cooked underground using volcanic steam. We’ll also try the local sweet muffins, Bolo Lêvedo.
After lunch, we visit Miradouro da Grota do Inferno, one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the Azores. The panoramic view of the crater lakes is unparalleled, especially in the late afternoon light.
Day 7: Santa Iria Viewpoint & Farewell
Our last location is Santa Iria Viewpoint for sunrise, one of São Miguel’s most spectacular coastal landscapes. The rugged cliffs bathed in the morning light create stunning contrasts between the deep blue ocean and green rolling hills.
After a final breakfast together, it’s time to say goodbye.
Transfers to the airport are arranged according to your flight schedule at no additional cost. I hope you leave with cherished memories, new friendships, and a collection of stunning photographs that truly capture the magic of the Azores.
Safe travels, and I hope to see you again.

HOTEL CRUZEIRO / THE LINCE AZORES

WHAT TO BRING
CAMERA GEAR
Camera (DSLR or Mirrorless)
For our photography sessions, a camera with full manual control is essential to achieve precise exposures. It should also have interchangeable lenses to cover a variety of focal lengths.
Lenses
Lenses are a personal preference, but we recommend bringing a focal range to a full frame equivalent of 16mm and 300mm. Frank Smith’s setup includes a M.Zuiko 8-25mm, 12-100mm and 40-150mm 300mm telephoto lens, which covers a wide range of compositions.
Filters
Graduated filters aren’t mandatory, but if you have them, feel free to bring them. ND filters can be particularly useful for experimenting with long exposures.
Tripod
While modern camera stabilization is impressive, a tripod is still recommended for long exposures and precise compositions. Some professional photographers even do focus stacking handheld, but a tripod can make certain shots easier and more consistent.
Backpack
We won’t be taking long hikes, but a comfortable, lightweight, and versatile camera backpack is essential for carrying and protecting your gear.
Drone
If you own a drone please consider bringing it with you. Ensure you can manually launch and land it and navigate basic flight paths. Bruno Ázera uses a DJI Mavic 3 Pro, but even a DJI Mini is capable of capturing stunning footage.
CLOTHING & FOOTWEAR
Waterproof and Windproof Jacket
The Azores’ weather is unpredictable, especially along the coastline, where ocean spray and sudden rain showers are common. A high-quality waterproof and windproof jacket with sealed seams, adjustable cuffs, and a hood is highly recommended.
Warm Layers for Cooler Evenings
Evenings can be cool, particularly at higher elevations. Warm layers, such as a fleece jacket or a lightweight down vest, will keep you comfortable during sunset shoots and night photography sessions.
Quick-Drying Pants
Opt for quick-drying pants made from synthetic materials or lightweight hiking trousers that offer both comfort and functionality.
Footwear
I personally prefer lightweight running shoes over heavy hiking boots. While boots provide more protection, the terrain in the Azores doesn’t necessarily require them, and running shoes offer better grip and flexibility. Choose what works best for you.
Swimwear
We’ll be visiting Terra Nostra Park, famous for its beautiful gardens and thermal pools. I highly recommend taking a dip, so don’t forget your swimwear and flip-flops. Towels are provided by the hotel.
The Azores’ climate is highly unpredictable, so packing the right clothing and gear is key to an enjoyable experience. Be prepared for sudden weather changes, and bring what makes you feel comfortable while photographing in various conditions.
GETTING TO THE AZORES
This photo tour begins on Terceira Island, but the easiest and most flexible way to reach the Azores is by flying into Ponta Delgada (PDL) on São Miguel Island, which offers the best range of international flight connections.
Most travelers arrive in São Miguel (PDL) and then take a short domestic flight to Terceira (TER) - this inter-island flight is included in your tour package, so you won’t need to worry about booking it separately. Once you land in São Miguel, we’ll guide you through the next steps to ensure a smooth connection to Terceira.
Sample Travel Routes
From the U.S.: Boston (BOS) → Ponta Delgada (PDL) → Terceira (TER)
From Europe: Lisbon (LIS) or Porto (OPO) → Ponta Delgada (PDL) → Terceira (TER)
If you're unsure of the best route from your location, feel free to contact us, we are happy to help you find a smooth itinerary.
Inter-Island Flights & Baggage Info
All internal flights between islands are operated by SATA (Azores Airlines) and are included in your tour package - you won’t need to book them separately.
