AMAZING AZORES
10 DAY PHOTO WORKSHOP
24 JULY - 2 AUGUST 2027
A 10-day immersive photography workshop across São Miguel, Flores, Corvo, and Terceira — focused on light, landscapes, and learning, led by local photographer Bruno Ázera.
Join me, a local photographer and guide born and raised in the Azores, for an exclusive 10-day photography workshop limited to just five participants. This is a hands-on, immersive experience for photographers who value personal guidance, flexibility, and meaningful learning in the field.
Having grown up on these islands, I know the Azores far beyond the usual viewpoints. This workshop explores São Miguel, Flores, Corvo, and Terceira, with a strong focus on light, weather, composition, and timing — always prioritizing photography over rigid schedules or tourist routines. We actively avoid crowded locations, seeking quieter moments and authentic landscapes where you can slow down, observe, and create stronger images.
With such a small group, the workshop naturally adapts to each participant’s level. Whether you’re building confidence or refining your approach, you’ll receive continuous, hands-on guidance in the field — from camera settings and composition to reading conditions and making creative decisions on location.
The Azores are a photographer’s dream: lush green landscapes, dramatic volcanic terrain, rugged coastlines, and one of the world’s largest whale sanctuaries. From volcanic craters and waterfalls to remote villages and powerful Atlantic seascapes, the diversity of these islands offers endless opportunities to elevate your portfolio.
Travel between islands is smooth and comfortable, using a combination of private transfers and inter-island flights. All transportation and accommodations are included, allowing you to focus entirely on photography, creativity, and the experience — without the stress of logistics.
This workshop goes beyond photography. It’s about connecting with local culture, experiencing traditional cuisine, and discovering hidden locations shaped by daily island life. From volcanic villages and natural hot springs to untouched viewpoints, every day is designed to feel authentic, unrushed, and purposeful.
Corvo is one of the most remote and untouched islands in the Azores, offering a rare opportunity to photograph raw landscapes and island life far from mass tourism. When conditions allow, we explore the island and surrounding coastline in ways that reveal perspectives few visitors ever experience.
While the itinerary is carefully curated, flexibility is essential. Each day adapts to weather, light, and unexpected photographic opportunities. As your local guide and photographer, I’ll be with you every step of the way, offering hands-on field guidance and ensuring a supportive environment where learning happens naturally in the landscape.
Small groups, big impact. With a maximum of 5 participants, you’ll enjoy an intimate atmosphere and individualized attention, making this a truly one-on-one learning journey.

ITINERARY OVERVIEW
Day 1: Arrival & Tea Fields of São Miguel
Welcome to São Miguel. After settling into your accommodation, we gather for a relaxed welcome lunch, where we meet as a group and begin the journey together.
In the afternoon, we head to the iconic Gorreana Tea Plantation, Europe’s oldest tea fields. The rolling green hills, winding paths, and repeating patterns make this the perfect introduction to the workshop. We focus on composition, visual rhythm, and working with natural light while easing into our first photography session.
This first afternoon is designed to be relaxed and unhurried, giving everyone time to settle into the rhythm of the workshop while enjoying their first photography session in the Azores.
We finish the day along the north coast cliffs, photographing the dramatic meeting of black volcanic rock and the Atlantic Ocean. Depending on conditions, locations such as Santa Bárbara or Cintrão offer powerful waves, textures, and changing light for our first sunset shoot.
Day 2: Volcanic Caldeiras & Iconic Landscapes
We start early with sunrise at Lagoa do Fogo, one of São Miguel’s most breathtaking volcanic lakes. As light spills into the crater, we focus on atmosphere, scale, and the interplay between light and shadow across the caldera walls and turquoise water below.
Midday takes us west into the Sete Cidades Highlands, where we explore a series of volcanic viewpoints. We photograph Lagoa do Pau Pique and Lagoa do Canário, working with top-down perspectives, color contrast, and natural framing. We then move to the main caldera to capture Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde, focusing on composition and depth.
We end the day at Boca do Inferno (Grota do Inferno) during golden hour. From this iconic viewpoint, we photograph the dramatic scale of the craters stretching toward the ocean — one of the most recognizable landscapes in the Azores.
Day 3: Coastlines, Furnas & Geothermal Landscapes
We begin the morning along the coast, photographing Ilhéu de Vila Franca from the shoreline. This location is perfect for working with minimalism, balance, and natural framing as the Atlantic surrounds the volcanic islet.
From here, we head inland to Furnas, where our focus shifts to details and atmosphere. In Terra Nostra Park, we explore botanical textures, rising steam, and the unique colors created by geothermal activity. Time is set aside to relax and enjoy the famous thermal pool.
Lunch is a traditional Cozido das Furnas, slow-cooked underground using volcanic heat — a true cultural highlight of the island.
In the evening, we cross the island to Mosteiros, photographing the dramatic black volcanic sea stacks. We focus on wave movement, long exposures, and sunset light as the ocean crashes against the basalt formations.
Day 4: Hello to Terceira & Volcanic Landscapes
We begin our time on Terceira Island with arrivals and transfers to our accommodation in the historic city of Angra do Heroísmo, where we will be based for the remainder of our stay.
In the afternoon, we head to Serra da Ribeirinha, a fantastic panoramic viewpoint overlooking Terceira’s iconic patchwork of green fields and the coastline, with Ilhéu das Cabras floating offshore in the background. From here, we work with wide compositions, layering, and scale, capturing one of the most distinctive landscapes on the island.
Nearby, for participants flying drones, Pico Dona Joana offers one of the most impressive aerial perspectives in the Azores, revealing the full geometry of the volcanic cone and its relationship with the surrounding farmland.
Day 5: Coastal Light & Volcanic Interiors
We start the day at Serretinha Natural Pools, where the early light illuminates Ilhéu das Cabras rising from the Atlantic. This is an ideal location to work with foreground elements, reflections, and changing coastal light.
From here, we return once again to Pico Dona Joana, this time under morning conditions. The softer light reveals new textures and subtle tonal shifts across the fields, offering a completely different photographic interpretation of the same landscape.
After breakfast in Angra, we spend the afternoon at Algar do Carvão, one of the few volcanic chimneys in the world accessible on foot. Inside, we explore dramatic contrasts, textures, reflections, and the unique challenge of photographing in low light.
We end the day at Biscoitos, capturing the rugged volcanic lava pools as golden light reflects off the Atlantic and waves crash against the black basalt coastline.
Day 6: Heritage Streets, Forest Roads & The Great Patchwork
Our morning begins at Ponta das Contendas, where dark lava formations meet the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse provides a strong focal point, perfect for creating balanced coastal compositions.
We then head into Angra do Heroísmo for a relaxed photo walk through its historic streets. This UNESCO World Heritage city offers colorful facades, tiled sidewalks, and intimate urban scenes, ideal for street and architectural photography.
In the afternoon, we explore Terceira’s forest roads and Black Forest, where misty conditions, winding roads, and dense vegetation create a moody, cinematic atmosphere — perfect for woodland photography and storytelling.
We conclude our Terceira experience at Serra do Cume, photographing the island’s iconic patchwork fields from one of Portugal’s most famous viewpoints as the light turns warm and golden.
Day 7: Farewell from Terceira
We gather for a final breakfast together, a relaxed moment to reflect on the landscapes we’ve explored and the images created over the past days. Stories are shared, favorite moments revisited, and final photographs backed up.
Transfers to Lajes Airport (TER) are arranged according to individual flight schedules, allowing for a smooth and stress-free departure.
You leave Terceira with more than just a collection of photographs — but with new perspectives, meaningful connections, and a deeper understanding of the Azores shaped by light, landscape, and time.

WHAT TO BRING
CAMERA GEAR
Camera (DSLR or Mirrorless)
For our photography sessions, a camera with full manual control is essential to achieve precise exposures. It should also have interchangeable lenses to cover a variety of focal lengths.
Lenses
Lenses are a personal preference, but I recommend bringing a focal range between 16mm and 300mm to handle most situations. My personal setup includes a Nikon 14-24mm, a 24-120mm and a 70-200mm telephoto lens, which covers a wide range of compositions.
Filters
Graduated filters aren’t mandatory, but if you have them, feel free to bring them. ND filters can be particularly useful for experimenting with long exposures.
Tripod
While modern camera stabilization is impressive, a tripod is still recommended for long exposures and precise compositions. Some professional photographers even do focus stacking handheld, but a tripod can make certain shots easier and more consistent.
Backpack
We won’t be taking long hikes, but a comfortable, lightweight, and versatile camera backpack is essential for carrying and protecting your gear.
Drone
I highly recommend bringing a drone to capture breathtaking aerial perspectives, especially along the coastline. If you bring one, ensure you can manually launch and land it and navigate basic flight paths. I personally fly with a DJI Mavic 3 Pro, but even a DJI Mini is capable of capturing stunning footage.
CLOTHING & FOOTWEAR
Waterproof and Windproof Jacket
The Azores’ weather is unpredictable, especially along the coastline, where ocean spray and sudden rain showers are common. A high-quality waterproof and windproof jacket with sealed seams, adjustable cuffs, and a hood is highly recommended.
Warm Layers for Cooler Evenings
Evenings can be cool, particularly at higher elevations. Warm layers, such as a fleece jacket or a lightweight down vest, will keep you comfortable during sunset shoots and night photography sessions.
Quick-Drying Pants
Opt for quick-drying pants made from synthetic materials or lightweight hiking trousers that offer both comfort and functionality.
Footwear
I personally prefer lightweight running shoes over heavy hiking boots. While boots provide more protection, the terrain in the Azores doesn’t necessarily require them, and running shoes offer better grip and flexibility. Choose what works best for you.
Swimwear
We’ll be visiting Terra Nostra Park, famous for its beautiful gardens and thermal pools. I highly recommend taking a dip, so don’t forget your swimwear and flip-flops. Towels are provided by the hotel.
The Azores’ climate is highly unpredictable, so packing the right clothing and gear is key to an enjoyable experience. Be prepared for sudden weather changes, and bring what makes you feel comfortable while photographing in various conditions.
GETTING TO THE AZORES
This photography workshop begins on São Miguel Island, continues through the wild and remote landscapes of Flores and Corvo, and finishes on Terceira Island.
The easiest and most convenient way to arrive is by flying into Ponta Delgada (PDL) on São Miguel Island, which offers the best range of international connections—especially from Europe and North America. Since the workshop starts here, it makes for a smooth and easy arrival.
Sample Travel Routes
From the U.S.: Boston (BOS) → Ponta Delgada (PDL)
From Europe: Lisbon (LIS) or Porto (OPO) → Ponta Delgada (PDL)
If you’re unsure about the best route or coming from a different location, feel free to reach out. I'm happy to help you figure out the most convenient travel option.
Inter-Island Flights & Optional Return
All internal flights during the workshop—from São Miguel to Flores, and Flores to Terceira—are included.
The workshop ends on Terceira Island, and you’ll have two options for departing the Azores:
Option 1: Depart directly from Terceira (TER), which has direct flights to mainland Portugal and select international destinations.
Option 2: I will include a return flight back to São Miguel (PDL) at no extra cost if you prefer to fly home from there, where there are typically more frequent flight connections.
Just let me know your travel preferences in advance, and I’ll help coordinate the best option for your return.

Tripods & extras: Safely stow heavier gear and accessories in checked luggage.
